Miyagi

The history of Sendai, capital of Miyagi Prefecture, is closely linked to the samurai, who founded the town over 400 years ago, and to its most trademark dish, gyutan, or grilled beef tongue. In the boreal summer, the Tanabata Festival becomes the principal focal point. Parades, street decorations, fireworks displays and thousands of wishes – written on small strips of paper hanging from bamboo – completely transform the city. A few kilometres away, you can also enjoy the hot springs of Akiu Otaki, the most famous in Japan.
