On the opening day of the 80th edition of the Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup in Zurich, one of the premier U-19 tournaments in the world, the headlines went to the youngsters from Dinamo Zagreb, BSC Young Boys and SC Internacional, who each recorded two wins in their group matches.

In the past, players such as Gerard Pique, Kaka and David Beckham have cut their teeth at this international event, and who knows, perhaps some of the talent on show this year will go on to showcase their skills in some of the biggest stadiums in the world.

One of those players could very well be Dinamo Zagreb’s Roko Baturian, who bagged a brace in his side’s 3-0 win over a strong West Ham United side. Team-mate Antonio Marin was on the scoresheet twice himself in an entertaining 3-2 win over SC Braga. West Ham's Alfie Lewis also nabbed a pair in the Londoners’ 3-0 win over FC Blue Stars, but the host club managed a goalless draw against FC Zurich – a fine result against a team, who finished third in last year’s tournament.

Group B sees Dinamo Zagreb top of the table and the only team in the competition yet to concede a point, followed by Braga, who have four points from three games. West Ham (three points) and FC Zurich (two points), meanwhile, have a game in hand on the top two. Zurich have played out two goalless draws thus far, while hosts Blue Stars are fifth with a point from three matches.

Things are more difficult to predict in Group A. Young Boys, whose first team were recently crowned as Swiss champions, got off to a flyer with victories over Espanyol (2-0) and Grasshoppers (3-1), before coming unstuck against Brazilian outfit Internacional in the last match on Wednesday, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat. The team from Porto Alegre had previously beaten Grasshoppers 2-0 before falling 2-1 to FC Cologne.

What that all means is that Internacional and Young Boys have six points from three matches played in Group A, while Espanyol and Cologne, who have three points each, have a game in hand and are poised to strike. Pointless Grasshoppers, meanwhile, will be hoping to open their account on Thursday.
