FIFA President attends Napoli tribute to Maradona

  • Napoli paid homage to Diego Maradona before facing Lazio today

  • FIFA President Gianni Infantino was in attendance

  • Maradona died on 25 November 2020

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was in Naples today to attend an emotional tribute organised by Napoli in honour of Diego Armando Maradona, a little over a year on from his death, on 25 November 2020. “The memory of Diego Armando Maradona lives on as strong as ever in the hearts and minds of all of us who love football,” said Infantino. “His phenomenal talent and his amazing achievements on the pitch will always be an essential part of football history. Though he is no longer with us, many new generations will continue to fall in love with the beautiful game thanks to him.”

The Argentinian idol starred for Napoli between 1984 and 1991. The club’s tribute to him came before the Serie A match against Lazio at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona, a game vital to Napoli’s hopes of staying on top of the table. Memories of Maradona provided the hosts with plenty of inspiration. “Maradona will always be in the thoughts of the players and fans,” said Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti earlier this week. “Diego’s greatness is everywhere we go. “The biggest thing for me personally is the void he left when he died. It says everything about his greatness. To say he was the greatest footballer in the world was not enough because he had a big soul that transcended football. He made all of us around him great.” The global football family has spent the last few days remembering Diego Maradona, a winner at the 1986 FIFA World Cup Mexico™ and a player who left his indelible trace in so many places.
